Interstate moving and furniture storage

Interstate removals and storage between homes

When moving-out and moving-in dates do not match, storage becomes part of the removal plan. The decision is about more than a weekly rental: you need the right holding location, access to any belongings you will need, and a workable final delivery.

Use this IRCO guide to compare storage in transit, self-storage and container options, understand the full handling cost and prepare an interstate removals and storage enquiry.

Start with the gap between moving out and moving in

Write down the date your current home must be empty, the collection window you can offer the removalist and the earliest date the destination can receive furniture. Keep those as three separate details. Settlement, cleaning, a delayed rental start or building work can each affect the handover, even when your own travel is already booked.

For example, a Friday collection and Monday key handover do not automatically mean three days of paid storage. The agreed interstate transport schedule may account for some of that time. Equally, a delivery window that starts before the property is available needs attention. Ask how the proposed collection, transport, storage and final delivery fit together.

When must the old home be empty?

Include the rental inspection, sale handover or access deadline. Allow time for cleaning after the last furniture and cartons leave.

When can the goods be collected?

Give a realistic pickup window, including lift bookings, loading-bay hours and any extra collection from a garage or storage unit.

When can delivery happen?

Include the key date, building access and the person receiving the goods. Flag a provisional address or settlement date while it is still uncertain.

If you are still looking for a home, say that in the first enquiry. A few nights between properties and several weeks of house hunting call for different storage decisions. The IRCO interstate removalist service is a useful starting point for the transport side; this guide helps you describe the holding period around it.

Where should furniture storage fit into the move?

Your goods might stay near the pickup property before travelling, be held near the destination before redelivery, or remain in a suitable container arrangement. Availability depends on the route and provider. The best choice also depends on whether you need access to the furniture and how certain the receiving date is.

Storage before interstate transport

Worth discussing when you need to vacate early and the destination is still being organised. Ask who arranges collection from storage, how long that booking needs and what changes if your final address moves.

Storage near the destination

Worth discussing when the goods can travel but keys, renovations or an apartment lift delay the last delivery. Ask how the destination address, access and receiving date will be confirmed.

A container moving arrangement

May suit some staged moves. Ask where the container is held, whether the goods remain in it, how access works and which loading and unloading tasks you organise yourself.

Storage in transit and self-storage work differently

Storage in transit generally describes a holding stage arranged as part of the removal. It might involve a warehouse, storage module or container, with access managed by the provider. A self-storage unit is usually a separate space you arrange, with its own access rules and rental agreement. You still need a plan for getting furniture into it and out again.

Think about a box of work equipment you will need next week. If it is packed deep inside a consignment, retrieving it could require an appointment and extra handling. A separate, accessible unit may offer a different arrangement. Ask about that before choosing on rental price alone.

Compare the container removal options with shared-load and backloading removals where they fit your dates. For a Western Australian move, the Perth storage and unpacking guide provides a more local starting point.

Check the complete moving-and-storage cost

A low weekly storage charge tells you only part of the price. Household goods still need collection, furniture protection, transport, any unloading into storage and a final delivery. Comparing the whole sequence makes it easier to see whether two quotes describe the same job.

What to ask for in a written interstate removals and storage quote
Part of the jobDetails worth checking
Collection and preparationLoading, furniture wrapping, carton packing, dismantling, stairs, long carries and extra pickup addresses.
Interstate furniture transportThe quoted inventory, transport arrangement, collection window, delivery window and any planned transfers.
Putting goods into storageOffload, handling, inventory recording and any charge for a storage module, unit or container.
Storage rentalThe charging period, minimum term, space allocation, payment schedule and rate for extending the stay.
Access during storageAppointment requirements, retrieval charges and whether selected items can be accessed without redelivering the whole load.
Final deliveryReloading, transport to the new home, unloading into rooms, stairs, lift bookings and any unpacking or assembly.
A change of planRebooking, extra storage time, a different address, waiting time and revised access or inventory.

Ask whether the storage estimate covers the period you expect and what happens if it runs into another charging period. If the arrival address is provisional, explain the likely area and property type so the final-delivery assumptions are clear.

Queensland's removalist consumer guidance recommends checking inclusions and possible storage costs. Use our written removalist quote comparison guide to put the offers side by side.

Compare a known end date with a realistic extension. Request the total for your expected stay and the amount added if it runs into the next charging period. If your new address is uncertain, keep that final-delivery assumption visible. You can then see the cost of an ordinary handover and a delayed one before choosing the storage arrangement.

Only some goods need holdingTwo inventories with storage and direct-delivery items separated.Split handling and each delivery stop.

For example, a laptop needed for work belongs in your travel kit, while a spare dining table can wait for the final delivery. Make that decision before loading. Changing it after goods are packed into managed storage can turn a simple retrieval into a separate handling job.

Give the furniture and cartons a clear identity

Walk through the home room by room, then the garage, balcony, shed and storage cage. List the furniture pieces and appliances, count cartons as they are packed and identify goods needing special handling. A king bed, modular lounge, glass cabinet and exercise machine say much more about the load than “a two-bedroom home”.

Separate the goods going into storage from anything travelling with you or being delivered elsewhere. If a bed needs to go straight to the new address while the rest waits, record that as a separate delivery request. Splitting a load can affect identification, handling and price, so include it before the booking is agreed.

The Australian Furniture Removers Association's inventory advice explains why an item list helps define the removal. For your storage plan, add carton numbers, destination rooms and photographs of important furniture. Keep a copy you can reach while the physical goods are elsewhere.

Make the list useful at every handover: Ask how the provider records the goods at collection, storage intake and final delivery. Use the same item descriptions throughout, and keep any changes to the load with your booking details.

Ask what protection is used for upholstered furniture, polished timber, glass, mirrors and fragile equipment. If professional packing is needed, identify the items and rooms in your enquiry. IRCO can discuss packing support for the actual load, rather than leaving “packing included” open to interpretation.

Pack for the holding period as well as the journey

Before wrapping or boxing, make sure household items are clean and dry. Allow freshly cleaned upholstery, outdoor furniture and other damp items to dry fully. Discuss storage preparation for valuable or delicate pieces with the removalist, including the materials that will touch their surfaces.

Use sound cartons, keep heavy contents in manageable boxes and label more than one side. Mark the destination room and a brief description without putting sensitive information on the outside. Keep the screws and fittings from dismantled furniture in labelled bags associated with the matching item.

Prepare fridges, freezers and washing machines according to the manufacturer's instructions and the mover's requirements. Tell the office about appliances or furniture that need special transport preparation. For carton organisation, the IRCO packing tips are a useful companion.

IRCO's published terms exclude dangerous goods and plants from storage removals. Raise uncertain items before packing. Discuss cover separately with an insurer: the terms state that goods in storage are not automatically insured with the contractor.

Keep medicines, identity documents, essential work equipment, chargers and the clothes you need for the holding period with you. Add anything that would be difficult to replace or retrieve at short notice. A clearly marked “travels with us” area on collection day helps keep those items out of the load.

Will you need something back before the final delivery?

This is worth deciding while the cartons are still in front of you. A warehouse storage arrangement may require staff to retrieve goods. A self-storage facility may have different visiting hours, vehicle access and unloading rules. Neither arrangement should be assumed to work like an extra room you can enter at any time.

Ask where the goods will be held, who to contact, how much notice an access request needs and whether there is a fee. If you expect to take a few items out, ask how that changes the inventory and what happens to the remaining goods. Tell IRCO about access needs when requesting the moving plan.

Three situations that change the decision

Keys arrive a little later

A short, known gap may suit a straightforward holding and redelivery arrangement. Focus on the agreed end date and destination access.

You are still finding a home

An uncertain stay makes extension costs, the storage location and redelivery notice more important. Keep the final address assumptions visible.

You need regular item access

Tools, work stock or seasonal belongings may need an access arrangement different from a closed household consignment awaiting one delivery.

These are planning examples. The storage provider's actual space, access conditions and service availability determine what can be booked.

Plan your move with Interstate Removalists Co

Bring collection, storage and final delivery into one enquiry

Tell IRCO the furniture load, exit deadline, expected holding period and receiving address or likely area. Include access needs and requested packing. We can assess the moving request with the storage gap visible from the start, so you can compare a complete arrangement.

Request your moving quote

Plan the day furniture comes out of storage

Contact the moving office when the receiving date is reliable enough to schedule. Provide the final address, property type, lawful truck position and the path into each room. Tell them about stairs, a long carry, a narrow driveway or changes from the address originally quoted.

For an apartment, line up the mover's delivery arrangement with the loading dock and lift booking. A key handover date alone does not reserve a lift. Ask the building manager for the permitted hours, vehicle clearance and access instructions, then pass them to the office before locking in the unloading appointment.

Have someone authorised to receive the goods, the inventory and space cleared for furniture placement. Check the carton count and important pieces during handover. Record missing items or damage and follow the booking's reporting process promptly.

If your interstate move finishes in a Melbourne apartment, our apartment access and delivery guide shows the measurements and building details worth collecting. Those access questions are useful even when the furniture starts in another city.

Put unpacking, bed assembly, furniture positioning and packing-material removal into the written scope if you need them. These services can make the first night easier, but each needs to be arranged as part of the job.

Before paying for a moving-and-storage arrangement

  • Know the storage location or arrangement, the party holding the goods and your contact for changes.
  • Record the intake inventory and how cartons or furniture components are identified.
  • Check the rental period, access rules, extension basis and redelivery notice together.
  • Keep the insurer informed of the actual storage period and any extension.
  • Record payment, cancellation and change arrangements with the accepted quote.

The move does not finish when the truck unloads into storage. Keep the same inventory and booking record until the final household delivery is checked. That continuity is especially useful when dates change or a relative receives the goods.

Prepare a moving-and-storage brief you can use

You do not need every answer before contacting us. Fill in what you know, identify the dates or access details still being confirmed and copy the summary into your quote enquiry. It keeps the whole move together: collection, storage and the final handover.

Interstate removals and storage questions

Do I need storage if the new home is ready a few days after collection?

Only if the agreed transport and delivery arrangement leaves a gap that needs separate holding. Give IRCO the exit deadline, collection range and earliest receiving date. A Friday pickup and Monday key release do not, by themselves, establish a three-day storage charge. The quote should identify any paid holding stage and its charging period.

How much do interstate removals and storage cost?

Compare the total from collection to final delivery: preparation, interstate transport, storage intake, rental, retrieval if needed, and redelivery. Load volume, access and duration affect that total. Get the minimum storage term and extension basis in writing, so a low weekly rate does not hide separate unloading, reloading or delivery charges.

Is storage in transit the same as self-storage?

Storage in transit is a holding stage linked to the removal, with access managed by the provider. Self-storage is a separate rental with its own visiting hours and rules. Choose around the access you need, where the goods will next travel and the complete handling cost. Regular access can favour a different arrangement from one final household delivery.

Can I access furniture or retrieve a carton during storage?

Access is governed by the storage arrangement. A managed warehouse consignment may need an appointment, staff retrieval and a handling fee. Identify the exact item and carton number before requesting access. Keep essential work equipment, medicines and documents with you if you will need them before redelivery.

Can some items go into storage while others are delivered?

A split delivery needs two labelled inventories, two receiving arrangements and a quote that includes the extra handling. Mark each piece and carton for its correct destination. Send the split to IRCO before booking, so suitability, storage space and any additional delivery stop can be assessed together.

What if I do not yet know the final delivery address?

Give the likely locality, expected duration and any known property requirements, marking the address provisional. Budget assumptions for final delivery still need to be recorded. Update IRCO when you secure the property; a different suburb, stairs or apartment dock can change the final transport and handling work.

Are my belongings automatically insured in storage?

No. IRCO’s published terms say stored goods are not automatically insured with the contractor. Check cover with an insurer for the transport, storage location and entire holding period, including any extension. Keep condition photos and the inventory available outside the stored load.

How do I prepare furniture for short-term or longer storage?

Start with clean, fully dry items, protected surfaces and labelled components. Appliances need manufacturer-specific preparation. Number cartons and keep a copy of their contents. Decide which belongings must remain accessible; storing them deep in a household consignment can make retrieval more difficult.

How much notice is needed to get furniture out of storage?

There is no universal redelivery notice period. It depends on the booked storage and transport arrangement. Record the required notice when booking, then contact IRCO once keys, the receiving address and any lift slot are reliable. An available property and an available delivery crew are separate parts of the appointment.

What happens when settlement is delayed again?

Send the revised dates promptly and obtain an updated arrangement covering storage extension, any rebooking, extra handling and final delivery. Keep the original inventory with the revision. Do not leave the truck or receiving crew working from an earlier key date.

Can backloading be combined with storage?

It can be assessed when the available shared capacity and holding arrangement fit the inventory and dates. Include the storage stage in the first enquiry. Establish where goods are held, whether they change vehicle or storage unit, and how the final delivery is organised and charged.

How can I reduce the overall moving-and-storage bill?

Remove unwanted goods before quoting, keep the inventory accurate and avoid retrieving items that could travel with you. Compare the complete handling sequence and minimum rental term. A cheaper storage location can cost more overall if it creates an extra collection, long transfer or difficult redelivery.
